This project consisted of a stage-constructed, five-lane wide, custom designed 90’ x 59’ continuous concrete slab (CCS) bridge with a sidewalk on each side. Coordination with the City’s Comprehensive Drainage Plan was required. Traffic volumes exceeding 21,000 vehicles per day (vpd) required the bridge be constructed in stages to maintain at least one lane of traffic in each direction at all times. Further complicating the design and construction were adjacent fiber optic cable ducts and billboard signage on each side of the bridge which could not be relocated.
Both the engineering and construction was funded by the Federal Highway Bridge Replacement and Rehabilitation program administered by the Iowa Department of Transportation. We began design in October, 2002 and the contract documents were completed in February for a May, 2003 letting through the Iowa DOT. Limited resident engineering and observation services were provided during construction.
